MARCH 2000

BRUBAKER BOX In 1972, Brubaker Industries, a Los Angeles Industrial-design group, developed this useful fun car that combined the best features of a van and dune buggy. The Brubaker Box was built on a standard Volkswagen Beetle chassis and met all U.S. Federal safety standards. It was 1 inch lower, and 8 inches wider than the Beetle. Inside it was a full 2 feet wider at elbow height! One large 4-foot door slid open on the curb side. An L-shaped contour couch was fitted at the rear. Wooden bumpers were positioned well away from the fiberglass body. Mag wheels and wide-belted tires were standard. The driver and his passenger sat well behind the front wheels, but instruments were located at the windshield so the angular difference from eyes to road and eyes to instruments was minimal.
