VW TYPE 82 KUBELWAGEN - After designing the Volkswagen in 1937, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche was asked to design a military version of the car in 1939. One-thousand were built by the end of 1940. The car was flat-sided for ease of production and was called Kubelwagen, which means "bucket car." Power was increased to 25 hp and engine displacement to 1.13 liters. The German "Jeep" proved very successful, and the air-cooled engine operated as well in Russian winter as in North African heat. Further, the rear-mounted engine kept the car moving through mud, snow, and sand, while more conventional vehicles were stuck, spinning their wheels due to light rear ends. The chassis was produced in the government-owned Volkswagen plant, while the slab-sided bodies were made in Berlin.

Herschel campd out in a Westfalia Campmobile version of this mid-60's High Roofed VW Delilvery Van at the recent weekend campout on Mac Jones' estate. Boy we had fun!

VW Trivia:

April's Answers:

1. VW advertised the Karmann Ghia as a "sporty" car not a true sports car because it was really only a Beetle with a sporty body, but no performance enhancement of the engine or suspension.

2. The Type 2 VW Camper was officially called "The Campmobile."

3. A Type 2 Kombi was a panel truck with 4 windows down the side (counting the door window), no panel behind the front seats, and removable middle and rear seats; plus a bit more interior upholstery. The Standard Microbus had more interior upolstery and a two tone paint job. The Deluxe Microbus had 5 windows down the side (plus the corner window of the pre- mid 1963 model) a set of skylight windows, a choice of 7 or 9 passenger versions, full upholstery a nicer dashborad, and chrome beltline trim.

4. Even though the type 3 Squareback is, in all aspects, a station wagen; the model that was advertised as VW's Staqtion Wagen was their Type 2 Deluxe Microbus.

5. A "Fridolin" was the nicname give to a type 3 chassised Westfalia-built van designed expressly for the German post office. Some were also sold as fleet vehicles to help pay for the tooling.

6. The "bubble window" camper pop-top changed from  being hinged at the front to hinged at the rear in 1974.

May's Questions:
1. In what year did the Beetle get a fule gauge as standard equipment and was that the first availability of it?

2. What was the very first year that an owner's manuals was published for the Beetle?

3. In what year didi the German company, Viking, first produce promotional models for VW?

4. In what year didi the engine cooling vents on the rear sides of the Type 2 go from being punched outwardly to inwardly?

5. Who is credited for finalizing the body design of the Beetle in 1938?

6. What was the final year of the non-Super Beetle year Cabriolet?
