Okay fellow club members, as my first official article for this newsletter let me warn you that two females talked on the phone for 45 minutes about VW’s so there is not going to be any technical engine information in this one. So sit back, relax and enjoy the many stories about Malia G’s 1961 VW Bug. In 1994, Malia graduated from school and received a bonus check from her job. She decided to take that money and spend $500 on this, now, great looking car. The bug is originally a Colorado car but Malia found it in Minnesota where she used to live. This beautiful bug was actually chosen for one of A&W’s “Mugs Bugs” but was rejected because they only were looking for 70’s models. They have no appreciation for true antiques. So Malia and her boyfriend Harley, brought this bug home with no engine and a great body with no rust. Harley told Malia that this bug was the one to get because we all know how hard it is to find a VW with no rust! Harley and Malia have put countless hours into this car as is evidenced by its showroom quality. They gutted the car out and Malia sandblasted it herself, something she is rather proud of. She told me that she let Harley do all of the greasy engine work because she doesn’t like to get dirt under her fingernails, but then again I don’t know many females who would. They put a sunroof in from a 73 Super Beetle and painted it Prism Blue. Malia picked the color out from a thousand little paint chips (like you are supposed to visualize what an entire car will look like from this one-inch chip), but she picked Prism Blue. Harley started painting it and called her to tell her to come look at it before he painted much more. She thought the color was perfect and fun so now she has a Prism Blue bug. We both agreed that VW’s are one of the few types of cars that can pull off colors of such “personality”. So, not only is Malia’s bug our “VW of the Month” but it was also featured in the magazine Hot VW’s. She and Harley were in Minnesota actually looking for parts and Malia decided to enter her half done bug (it was missing the mirrors and windshield wipers) into this contest as a daily driver. She ended up taking first place and later had her picture and name put in the Hot VW’s magazine. What an honor to win first place with a bug that isn’t even fully put back together yet. Malia is now driving a new beetle saying that being a VW’s lover is in her blood, as most of us understand. Her 1961 is extremely babied and spends all of our rainy, nasty Memphis days in the garage and only comes out to see sunshine. Thanks Malia for the great stories and we can’t wait to see the bug at one of our meetings!
