AUGUST 2001 - Volkswagen of the Month |
Owners:
Dee & Linda1970 Ghia
- By Bill C.
Dee & Linda of Memphis own this month’s VW.
Dee grew up like many of us, a street-rodder in the truest sense of "American Iron." While growing up in Missouri, Dee would cruise over to Linda’s high school with one of his, or his buddy’s, cool hot rods. I think he actually moved to Memphis because of being so well known by Missouri law enforcement. Just kidding… not. Oh, yes; this is supposed to be about his Ghia.
So, As you can see in the photo, it is a show winner, indeed. Named in honor of his granddaughter, he calls it "derengle", which is "angel" in German.
It has not always been another "pretty face." 7 years ago, Dee rescued his Ghia from a local VW repair shop storage lot, thinking he would "fix it up" for Linda. It had a lot of "rehab" ahead. 3 years to be exact. But Dee could see the hidden beauty. A full, body-off restoration called for new floor pans. Even the heater channels had to be replaced, with the help of Metric Motors.
But after finally finishing the bodywork and a knockout purple paint job by Tim of Memphis Collision, Dee had a problem. He had fallen in love with this little angel. He gave her only the best, including a Gene Berg 2110cc engine, big dual-weber carbs, a custom tan interior, and Riviera aluminum wheels. Truly a ga-ga Ghia
So, even though I have heard him claim it to be Linda’s, we all KNOW better. Right? Linda, I feel your pain!
