SEP 22, 2001 – Park Place Inn, Jonesboro Our club had the honor and joy of helping kick-off the NE Arkansas Volks Folks first annual VW show. I fine bunch of friendly folks, they had events planned for Friday evening (free Spaghetti Supper & Poker Run), in addition to the Saturday show. So, we actually had two caravans; one on Friday afternoon & another Saturday morning. Connie and I were a part of the Friday caravan, along with the Dee & Linda, Mitch & Carolyn, Camille , and Herbie & Tina – 6 VWs in all. And, oh yes, it was a pretty site … all the Volks-iron headed up the 4-lane in single file. With rooms (double or king) for only $29.95, everybody stayed at the Park Place Inn. Too busy to take a dip in the pool this time. But not too busy for McD’s breakfast on Saturday… I’m getting ahead of myself. Friday night, there was a "navigate for yourself" hi-low Poker Run. Dees, Hebies & us formed up a 4-car team and vroomed off to the first Sonic on the map. We didn’t even get lost and got to see a lot of Jonesboro that we would have otherwise missed. The only bit of discomfort was when "yours truly" made a bad judgement at a raised pedestrian crossing at the University. With tow bar plate mounted…uh.. need I say more? I "left my mark", so to speak. The Poker Run allowed us to also discover Colton’s Steak & Catfish. Yeh yeh… oink.. excuse me… I mean .. SOU-EEE! Poker Run results? Just call me "Empty Pockets." However, I believe our group was awarded the "Low ET!" At some point, everybody crashed into the "tired position" and tried to zonk for the night; with anticipation of early morning polishing cloth workout routine. "Come on! You can do it! And 1 & 2 & 3 & 4! Lift those arms. Rotate those elbows! Wax on. Wax off." In spite of the rigorous workout, we all had lots of fun in the sun and cool breezes on Saturday too. I love these Fall shows. And yup, Connie & Linda walked to the nearest mall for some casual shopping, while the rest of us told lies about how much horsepower our engine put out… and trying to win one of the big door prizes. Of course we did our best to eat all the burgers and bratwurst the Volks Folks could cook up on their grills. I love those food values! Yes. I scored some old issues of Hot VWs & VW Trend magazines… and a few purple toy bugs too. Mitch bought up all the friction-motor toy baja bugs; so we could have a "duel in the asphalt." I believe his cute little daughter, Alexandra won both my heart and the "clash of the Titan Bajas." I must have been in my Grandpa mode. Of course, after drooling over some really beautiful trophies all day, we were chomping at the… steering wheels to see how we did. By now, you want to know
how we did. Right? Check out the picture. That says it all. We also got
Best Club Participation, with 12 members showing cars L-R:
Mitch , Dee Foster, Bobby , Eric , Bill , Tina , Herbie , Camille , &
Ricky . Winning MSVW members with membership in both clubs: Don & Robert (not counted in "participation" total for us) See you next year! Bill C.
