VW TRIVIA

- By Herschel D. -

NOVEMBER'S – ANSWERS

  1. The earliest VWs before 1943 only had 22.5 horsepower, D.I.N., that’s about 27 HP S.A.E.

  2. The Kubel-like little car, unique to Australia, was called the Country Buggy. A few years ago I saw one over at Moon Bugs.

  3. VWs are built in Pueblo, Mexico.

  4. In 1945 VW salvaged enough parts and raw materials to build a number of converted Beetles called Type 83 (see below). They were just Beetles with the rear portion above the beltline replaced by a big box with rear doors. Most of them were outfitted as ambulances and post office trucks.

  5. In 1963 VW ran an ad that had both a 1929 Model "A" Ford and a 1965 Beetle.

  6. Of the original 40 or so hand-assembled 1938 Beetles (they rode on Kubel chassis) only 2 cars remain, although an additional number of their engines still remain. Dr. Mac Jones has a running one! The 2 cars are in VW’s museum in Germany.
