Herbie’s 2001 New Beetle GLS
- By Roxanna J. & Bill C.
Herbie, our VDubber of the month, has been around VW's as long as he can remember. His first memory was a gold VW convertible. He would wash the car just to be allowed to sit in it for hours, listening to the radio (O-o-o-h! burnt points!). The first car he ever drove was a baby blue VW Bug with a butterfly painted on the deck lid.
Herbie was Herbie long before the movie came out. Having a name such as Herbie was ok for a child, especially after the movie. But as a young teen it was definitely not as cool.
After owning several classic ragtop bugs, he now owns a 2001 New Beetle GSL and it is decked out especially for him. The day he went back & picked up "Herbie Bug" from Gossett VW, it had drawn so many New Beetle buyers that they were glad to see it go. Why? Because EVERYBODY wanted "THAT" New Beetle, which was already sold. And they were willing to pay over retail for it. Herbie says that in the first 2 days he believes Herbie Bug caused 2 wrecks and a near miss with a light pole... & lots of neck twisting.
When he & Tina go to Wolfchase to shop, it seems to take them 15-20 minutes to get inside after being asked about their New Beetles. By the way, Tina’s is that bright yellow "Smiley Faced New Beetle."
When they participate in area car shows, you will see the display of "Herbie" memorabilia he has collected, along with an original 1980 date-stamped Herbie movie ticket stub, plus an 8 x 10 lobby card signed by Don Knotts. Herbie and Tina are all about showing people what fun it is to drive a New Beetle, always having fun meeting new people.
Gossett Volkswagen sponsors both of them at VW shows and will do so for the New Beetle show this coming June in Roswell, NM. Herbie is thankful to their 2 sales reps. and gen. mgr. for all the help and support.
And coming soon - both his Herbie and Tina’s Smiley Faced New Beetle are scheduled to be used in the next 2003 VW calendar released by VW of America. The photo shoot was held a few weeks ago at Shelby Farms.
In the case of Herbie and Tina, it just goes to show you two Beetles are twice the fun!
