Drive-In Nights are Fun!

- By Bill C.

MAY 18th, Malco Summer Drive-In – Here it was; 3rd Saturday, 3rd Screen, and 3rd Row... from the BACK. Even though we had some unseasonably cool temperatures, I played the idiot and DEMANDED that we go to the movies... the OUTSIDE movies. Actually, I did not to demand, just do some persuasion. Connie was hoping I would chicken out. "A MAN NEVER chickens out," I thought. So, we’ll just take lots of hot coffee and blankets, and winter clothes. That will do it! I am sure I have never been so snuggly. Brrrrrr...

I was sort of glad that the movie listings on the web site were wrong. You see, I also checked the reviews that the viewers entered and they were not that great (1 Star out of 4). "Too much sex, and not enough plot," I believe was one comment about "The Unfaithful." The "plot" part bothered me. ha-ha! Then, referencing "Murder by the Numbers," somebody else said, "CSI does a better job." Well, I love CSI, but I don’t have to pay to see it. So when I pulled into the ticket line, I cheered to see "Spiderman" and "The New Guy" on #3 Screen. Connie just shook her head.

We set up our lawn and camping chairs, while still wondering if our "air-coolers" wouldn’t be warmer, even without a heater. But, naaahhhh! So we all got to talk to our VW friends and met some new ones before "Spidey" started. Tamra showed up with the top of her white ‘vert down, teeth chattering. Also, making appearances were Dee & Linda in the Ghia Monster, Bobby & Amy in the Gold Sun Bug, Chad & Jackie in a familiar looking RED bug (nice headliner!), Herbie in his Herbie NuBee, Richard in Rick’s bus (he must have had to do a swap), and even David & Betty showed up in the Magenta ‘vert (on the way back from a show near/in Savannah, TN?). I am doing this from memory, so please forgive. I think I remember Herbie saying that he was also at the car show and they both won trophies. We had one of our "almost members" show up, Chris. We just have a few formalities to cover. Oh, don’t forget Connie, Lightning Bug & me. It was a good turnout.

Then, it was show time before we knew it. Now, our boy Spidey is not that cool at first. Sort of a nerd. But what a difference a spider bite makes! I laughed at one scene so hard I spilled coffee all over my club shirt. Now who’s the nerd? I won’t tell you anymore than that.

I had seen some of the previews of The New Guy. But I was afraid that they were just showing ALL the funny scenes. Nope. They have plenty more where those came from. It probably was a guy’s movie, though; sort of a Dumb & Dumber thing. But Connie suffered the sacrifice and we stayed to the end; and me, sick with laughter. That does not sound quite right. Laughter is good for the heart. So I should be able to run a marathon.

Try to join us this month. It is good, cheap therapy. And, hey, maybe you will find a new hero too!

Show Time!

First, he was a "Nerd Guy."

But then, he became a "Neat Guy."
