MAY’S – ANSWERS

  1. Q: What does "fussbremse" mean in German? A: "Fussbremse" means brake pedal in German, I believe it literally means "foot brake."

  2. Q: In what model year did the Beetle get a plug for electronic diagnostic testing? A: In 1970 VW added a plug-in diagnostic system to their cars.

  3. Q: True or False. Bright yellow paint was available for the Beetle from 1960 on. A: False. Bright yellow paint was not factory standard until the early 70s.

  4. Q: In the early 30s, before Hitler assigned the Peoples car design project to Ferdinand Porsche and his team, Porsche’s small car efforts were not yet referred to as a "Volkswagen." What did they call it? A: The early predecessor VW prototypes, the 1932 Zundapp, and the 1934 were referred to as "Volksautos." Volkswagen began with the first "official" prototypes, the Type 60, V 1 (V stands for "Versuch" and means experimental).

  5. Q: What color were the first Volkswagen, prototypes, the V3, painted? A: This was sort of a trick question because all the photos of the mid-1930s VW prototypes are in black and white and none of the still living people, who were there, such as Herbert Klaus, can remember the color(s)! Since bright red looks black in black and white photos, VW delightfully decided to paint their recently recreated 1935 prototype that color.

  6. Q: How long was the production run of the Type 4?
    A:
Actually the VW Type 4 was made from late 1969 (as a 1970 model) until 1974, but we only got it from 1971 to 1974
