Betty G’s ’71 Super Beetle Convertible
- By Roxanna J.
The "Cub" reporter for DAS MUNDSTÜCK isn't supposed to have a "favorite" car from all the rest in the club. I know this. But, I have got to admit; the first time I saw that cute little convertible was at a car show in which the club participated last year at Shelby Farms. I loved the car, the color, the interior, just everything! Very cool car! Very cool people that owned it.
The car I am speaking of belongs to David and Betty of Arkansas. The car is "Betty's Bug." They share something very special with this little car. Dual-ownership. When the car is running, she belongs to Betty. When it breaks down, David gets to own her. Pretty cool arrangement! Personally, that sounds like a great idea! I know of others in the club that have some type or similar arrangements. You drive "our" van all week. I enter it into our VW show in October, I win first place in our class, "You" take the trophy home. Sound familiar?
David helped a friend buy this little treasure in the early 90's. The friend was buying her for his wife. They had to move to another state and the friend made David a deal. There is that word, "deal." Sometimes these "deals" will backfire, and I know you VW owners know this to be true. This poor bug caught on fire, and burned the engine area and the wiring. Not a good deal at all. Then she was stripped down and the restoration started. It took them 14 months to rebuild her. And that, my friends, is a record!
Betty and David were talked into going to a show in August of 1995 and have been showing the little car ever since. They have won over 250 awards over the years in shows in Arkansas, Alabama, Missouri, Mississippi and Tennessee.
And of course, these amazing little cars always have such potential for wonderful stories or fun things that happen to them and their owners. This one is no different. I am one that happens to believe in fate, destiny, serendipity, whatever. And I believe this little car is truly where it wants to be. David and Betty sold her in September of 2001, and then had the opportunity to buy her back in December 2001. Sounds like a classic case of not being able to do without each other!
