Bobby B’s 1974 Sun Bug Super Beetle

- By Roxanna J.

Being a "multiple bug" owner definitely fits this month’s Volkswagen of the Month owner. I’ve lost count of how many bugs Bobby has had! He says he has had 4 Volkswagens, but his 1974 Sun Bug Super Beetle was his first bug, and is his favorite one. It is the one with many memories and many ups and downs. Bobby says, more downs than ups. But the ups definitely make Volkswagen ownership worth it.

This project, the "Top Von Gold" which means Pot of Gold in German, started in April 1995. Many of the original parts that made it a Sun Bug were gone, excluding the factory rims, the worn and torn interior, and the worn out sunroof. Due to the cost of parts, Bobby decided not to go back to "original." A gearshift knob alone was gong for $400, and people were still bidding!

"Top Von Gold" had a new paint job in 1998, which took over a year to complete due to some wheeling and dealing by Bobby. Imagine that! Wheelin’ and Dealin’ Bobby. You gotta love him! He shaved the fenders, installed 1958 Beetle taillights, and removed the trim. It has a 1600cc dual port engine from Roy Rogers, 8-spoke aluminum wheels, and hopefully new front brakes by the time this newsletter rolls out.

Like any other VW I have seen, the Sun Bug is in the process of restoration, a work in progress. But the goal is to keep it drivable until our show in October. The Top Von Gold won the People’s Choice trophy at our show at the Belz Mall last year; and has won a few 2nd and 3rd place trophies too.

Bobby has thoroughly enjoyed driving and showing his "Top Von Gold."
