Tom’s 1990 Red Corrado
- By Roxanna J.

Tom has been a fan of these cars since 1963, when his Dad bought a VW and finally allowed him to drive it. At that time, there were no local sources for really high performance parts for VWs. So when his Dad let him drive it, he would always take off the exhaust tips. He always carried a wrench in his pocket, and put them back on before he drove the car back home. His Dad never knew he took them off.
Tom's son, Dan, bought this red Corrado in Nashville, TN in October of 1995 and now Tom has become so hooked on these cars he has bought three of them in the past three years, fixed them up and turned them loose. He now owns the 1990 Corrado that Dan had. Something about saving a life?
The history of VW’s Corrado is short. They first sold in 1990, replacing the Sirocco and sold for about $21,495.00 to compete with the Porsche.
Since only $1,000 more would buy a Porsche, most people bought Porsches. Corrado's did not sell well at all, and only 15,000 were produced. In 1991 the Corrado VR6 was introduced. This model only lasted until 1993.
Tom’s 1990 has all the accessories, power windows, door locks, sliding moon roof and cruise control. It has a 4 cylinder, supercharged engine, which is factory rated at 158 HP. It's advertised speed is 145 mph.
This red Corrado has been modified both in engine and body accessories, and was repainted to the original color six years ago. It has approximately 250,000 on it. Tom has a the original MSO which lists 17 to 25 MPG for city driving and 23 to 32 MPG on the highway. A very hard machine to keep your foot out of!
But, Tom says he has had a difficult time keeping this car running. Parts are scarce and no longer being manufactured. The best and most reasonable priced parts dealer is one in Canada. But, if you had to depend on VW dealerships in the US to buy parts, the car would still be sitting in the driveway.
Tom and his sons are currently looking for an air-cooled VW. They think they won't be such "outlaws" for the club!
"Outlaws." Doesn't that sound like fun to you?
