Chris’ 1973 Orange Squareback

- By Roxanna J.

Squareback? What exactly, do you ask, is a Squareback? Are you sure it isn't a Hunchback? In the VW world, most things are rounded. Words like unique, come quickly to mind. But not narrow, which is how Chris Layton describes his first experience with a Squareback.

Chris's experience with Squarebacks came while he was in college. He had a friend that owned a yellow Squareback. Chris thought this was the most amazing car around. It was narrow, drove better than a Super Beetle, had a ton of room and had a totally unique look. (see, I told ya!) Sounds like love at first sight. Especially since the daily driver he was driving at the time, a Fiat Spider, was experiencing some "technical difficulties" and getting leaked on every time it rained no longer fit Chris's definition of fun!

Tracking down a Squareback soon proved to not fit the definition of "fun" either. A drive to Birmingham to look at a clean '71 White Squareback proved to be a bust. The car wouldn't make it around the block, much less back to Memphis! Next on the agenda was a yellow Squareback in Horn Lake. Looked great! Drove great! The never ending battle of rust vs. car was definitely going on and the car was losing! And Chris's quest for the perfect Squareback continued.

Occasionally, we women prove that we do have some amazing merits to offer. The next lead for the perfect Squareback actually came from a family member of Erika's. This lead brought Chris to the '71 Orange Squareback that barely ran, but was clean, close to home and mostly rust free! In Volkswagen language, that meant the car was basically perfect. Of course, Chris drove it until he found another one, you know, always on that quest for the perfect Squareback! Nat Youngblood now owns the '71 Squareback.

Personally, I think that everything in life happens for a reason, regardless of whether you own a Volkswagen or not. Chris found a note on his car while at work on day leading him on yet another quest for the perfect Squareback. This quest lead him to a VW shop on Getwell. Chris had asked about this very car a number of years earlier, but the car was not for sale at the time. Just his luck, the car was now for sale. No rust, and at just the right price! This car, with a little interior work, along with some tunes going on from Sound Waves is now Chris's daily driver.

Is the quest for the Perfect Squareback over for Chris? Has Nat found his perfect Squareback? Stay tuned for future editions of Rox's VW of the Month. Only time will tell!
