T oureg Wins – It’s not really even "out" and it is already named the winner of an 8-way SUV shootout in one of the best known national automotive magazines. And it beat out some BIG names, of which are past winners themselves. So with what did the Toureg compete? Its competitors were the GMC Envoy SLT, Land Rover Discovery SE, Lincoln Aviator, Volvo XC90 T6, BMW X5 3.0i, Acura MDX, and the Lexus GX470.Quoting from the article such descriptions as "a 4-wheel Swiss Army knife" and "runaway winner," the model tested was equipped with a 310 HP engine and a 6-speed automatic, along with adjustable suspension height (up to 11.8 inches of ground clearance). It won the acceleration test, braking test, lane change test, and tied with the BMW for top honors on the skid pad test. It was also referred to as a "grizzly bear" in the off-road stuff. Price? This is not a pack of econo-boxes. The Toureg’s price was mid-range at $46,500 (est.) as tested, with a base of $39,500.The GMC was the lowest price at $39,650 as tested, with Lexus topping out at $53,435.
