Toadsuck Park, Conway, AR, OCT 4, 2003 – It’s hard to believe that we would get such good weather for two shows in a row (did I just do a rhyme?). Finally getting use to the routine (making a list this time), I headed out to meet Ricky B. in West Memphis for our trip to Conway. We made great time, but you know me. I had to add some drama. Just this side of Little Rock my coffee kicked in and I was chattering up a storm on the walkie-talkie; when out in the back there arose such a clatter, I got off the gas to see what was the matter. When what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a bug in the other lane; it wanted to steer. Adrenaline rush, on top of caffeine; the scariest sight I ever had seen. Ease off to the right, and try not to crash. Don’t let old Lightning, into your bumper to bash. Okay, here’s the story. At interstate speed, a tow bar pin came out. Don’t know why; it had a strong clip in it. While producing a 4th of July display of fireworks, it held Ricky’s attention to the point that he never noticed the pin flying by at all. After taping a monster-sized screwdriver in its place, we limped to the nearest truck stop. A $10 padlock provided a worthy substitute and we finished the trip without further complications (I gotta upgrade to a trailer… ha ha). I was glad to finally meet one of our newer members from Rosedale, MS, John Paul G., and his lady friend. And of course it is always good to see old friends and acquaintances. Consider this as another engineering test. CAVF set the show up a little different this year. The vendors and registration, etc., were to the left of the main drive. The rest of the park, to the right of the drive was dedicated to show cars. We had lots of room to spread out. The show shirts were among my favorites. The theme picture on the front was a red bug with two, bug-eyed toads (male and female) inside. Even bought an extra one. When awards were presented, NEAVF received the best club participation award. Eric S. got Best Paint, Best Interior, and Best of Show with his Yellow Baja. Jim M. received Best Engine in his ’67 Blue Bug. Ricky & I both got first place in our individual classes. Lots of fun. And, hey, on the trip home…. NOTHING exciting happened!
