5th Annual VWs Over Memphis
Show & Swap Meet

- By Bill C.

(Formerly) Belz Factory Outlet Mall, Lakeland, TN, OCT 18, 2003 – We survived! … AND had a good time while we were at it. Where do I start? How about August, when we read the article in the newspaper about our show site SELLING to some out of town company. And the general manager, fellow member, Pam was no longer in their employ. Eeeek! Lots of phone calls later, and we were still on. Just had to spend a little more money than we had planned, and find some liability insurance. Thanks to Vintage Volkswagen Club of America for coming through and helping us with that. Now, full speed ahead!

Bobby B. kept us all focused and did the majority of the worrying. He cracked the whip and we put on a great show.

Yours truly kept a vigilant eye on the weather and came up with a plan regarding the rain date. Thank goodness we did not.

But at o’dark hundred in the a.m. on show day, the Fog Dog came to town. Visibility was down to less than a quarter - mile. As I limped along in the pea soup, I couldn’t help but think how the other contestants were having it a lot tougher, coming from distances.

Our crew of shining faces was already at work, setting up and roping off. Forget trying to shine up your ride for a while. The fog saw to that.

I think we even started registration on time. We arranged for a professional photographer to photograph the show cars as they moved through the registration area. The owners would later have the opportunity to purchase a poster size print of their VW. Mine was BEAUTIFUL! It was the high point of the show for me. I treasure it.

The geography of locations represented widened considerably this year. We had clubs from both the St. Louis area and Owensboro, KY with a good turn out. They also managed to take home a lot of the trophies and door prizes. GOOD for them! I believe the winner of the longest distance traveled in their show VW was Leo Van Delft, of Tulsa, OK. We also had folks from Dallas, TX, Jackson, MS, Huntsville, AL, Nashville & east Tennessee along with our sister clubs from Little Rock and Jonesboro, AR. Lots of familiar and new faces.

I did not envy the judges of their tasks. There were so many really fine VWs. And some paint jobs that made me  turn a jealous shade of lime green. Of course we all have our favorites, so I won’t go there.

Speaking of favorites, I was so glad that Bobby elected to change the People’s Choice award. Instead of having the contestants vote on this award, only NON-contestants (THE People!) could vote. That’s what I like to see. Let the spectators speak! (say that 3 times fast) And Charlie S. won! Go Charlie!

We had a pretty good selection of swap vendors. I picked up a rebuilt speedo for “Verty,” and it really looks good, folks. And the perimeter of the show was be-speckled with VWs for sale (that chose not to pay the small fee).

We gave away a lot of door prizes throughout the day; even a Caribbean cruise. I ended up with a red custom steering wheel. Anybody know where I can get an adapter? Would look great on Verty. I’ve been practicing with it in my recliner. Wow! Does my chair ever take those corners, or what?

Hope you enjoy a few of the pictures here and hope to see you again NEXT year.
