NOVEMBER’S – ANSWERS

    1.      Q: What was the model year of the last VW Beetle sedan to be built in Germany?

    A: 1978

    2.      Q: In the early days of the Beetle who was the first American magazine contributor to praise the VW Beetle?

A: Tom McCahil, He virtually invented magazine automobile testing, did so with an irreverent sense of humor that was definitely not “politically correct,”,  and was very popular.  His opinion really mattered to car manufactures a lot, and he did it in the pages of Mechanix Illustrated from 1946 until his death in the early 70’s. When he praised the VW beetle in 1950 he was laughed at and scorned by the automobile reviewers of other magazines in those early post WWII days when anything German was still resented, but he soon had the last laugh as the little car came to prove its worth.

    3.   Q: What model was the first water-cooled model to wear the VW name?

A: 1970 K70, an unsuccessful NSU design that had actually begun in development before VW had bought Auto Union of which NSU was a part.

    4.   Q: What set of parts on the last Mexican Beetle, The “Ultima Edition, was sourced from the state of Tennessee?

A: A set of whitewall tires from Coker tire co. in Chattanooga, TN.

    5.   Q: What were the production years of the VW Fox?

A: 1987-84, the car was built in Brazil.

    6.   Q: What was the first model year of the VW Rabbit?

    A: 1975.
