Hopefully & Likely History VW Concept-R Econo Boxster Roadster – What if… VW mimicked the scenario of the VW Toureg and Porsche Cayenne with the Boxster and came out with an “economy” version? It would sure make the VW brand more exciting, wouldn’t it? With the changes that I have seen reflected in the Toureg and now the Phaeton, I have an easy time believing that this “step-sister of the Boxster” is very possible. The image-changing 2-seat, steel bodied CONCEPT-R was recently revealed at the September 2003 Frankfurt car show. What a beauty, with its retractable, 2-piece, folding hardtop roof, impressive wheel arches and aggressive stance.
The good news is that VW executives have hinted that production might be in the future, while others actually said that it has the go ahead for production to begin in Germany in 2006.
The Concept-R is powered by a mid-engine version of the 24-valve 3.2-liter V-6 that is currently in the R32. By going with direct injection and a modified exhaust, this version pumps out 261 hp (6250 rpm) and 253 lb-ft of torque (2800 rpm).
It is, of course, rear wheel drive and uses VW’s new 6-speed, double clutch, Direct Shift transmission (Audi TT). Manufacturer estimates state a 0-62 mph time of just 5.2 seconds, faster than both the Boxster S and the R32. How about a top end of over 155 mph? I better put a defense attorney on retainer!
Its dimensions perceive a smaller size than the Boxster. It is 164” long (6” shorter), 70” wide and 49” high (1.5” lower). The wheelbase is 101.5” and runs 19” wheels with 40 series tires. Another interesting point is that CONCEPT-R actually places value on using R32 Golf components rather than sharing the Boxster platform. Whatever! Order me up a pair! Which brings us to price. Officials say that it will be competing with the Miata/MR2. Not bad! And check out the performance! Order me an extra, for a spare! |
