VW Horizons

Baby VW SUV

SUV Coming? – If the Touareg goes well, VW may release a smaller, more affordable version that could compete with the Bimmer X3.

Go 4 Golf 5

More on Golf V – You know, from previous blurbs here, that the 5th generation Golf will get to us, one day. The GTI will be the first model here. Well, some editors have been having a turn at driving and kicking the tires on the European versions. I think they like it in a big way. It’s bigger inside and out. The interior left them impressed in every way; more comfortable seating, with fit-and-finish at a whole new level; quieter; materials that brings the Phaeton to mind. Wow. I’m already impressed.

They go on to praise the drive experience; giving credit to a compact version of the multilink rear suspension developed for Phaeton. The 5 has a lot less roll in the twisties and is much more responsive, so they say.

They even like the bigger headlights and taillights, “helping it to become a more mature car.” Well, we’re still waiting to play some Golf…. 5, that is.

Could Be

Retractable Hardtop – The volks at the top are considering the addition of a retractable hardtop model or two. One should be between the Jetta & Passat; and another between the Passat & Phaeton. Things get blurry after that. It is noted that it will not be “traditional sedan” or coupe or even a 4-door something. But they might have a Maserati transaxle.

Pass the Cayenne, Please

Econo-Cayenne – To offer a more affordable version of its higher end SUV, cousin Porsche will be offering a VR-6 powered model called, simply, Cayenne… without the “S” or the “Turbo.” Though its 0-60 time is a little slow (9.1), the 247 hp VR-6 should still top out at 133. And, the good news is that the MSRP will finally dip below $50K, at $44.000.  Now I can sleep at night!

But, you still get the excellent 4WD system with 6 position self leveling air suspension, and traction management system, and solid chassis. And that VR-6 has some Porsche touches to it, with a special intake manifold, HD oil/water heat exchanger, tuned exhaust and specific computer tweaks.
