AUGUST 21, 2004 – Judging by our member turn-out, this was one of our most successful events. We had 25-30 members show up through the day at Roy Rogers on Yale Road for our 9 AM to 3:30 PM Fix & Tune (for short). It was overcast and the weather cooperated with us; no rain and tolerable temperatures. I still remember the lady visitor at one of our meetings saying, “Gosh, there are a lot of VWs in your club that don’t run. How many people have VWs that actually run?” Made you wanna go “Hmmmm?” We had cruise-ins, poker runs, show and shines, but this event was a home run! Thank YOUR events committee. We decided not to go overboard and try to tackle too much. So we limited it to simpler things (no engine removals! Ha!). The VWs needing a attention far outnumbered the ones for the show & shine area. But that was okay because that is what it was all about. The members did everything from tweaking convertible mirrors, to carburetor tunes, heater system repairs, electrical fixes, brake line bleeding, and ignition repairs and adjustments. Chip and Henry, of Roy Rogers, were both very busy behind the parts counter, selling us lots of parts and neat accessories. Somehow, they found time to fire up the charcoal grill to cook up some burgers and dogs for lunch. I think everybody in attendance enjoyed the event. I am glad they could get some needed help … or just a “helping foot.” Ray Glass, manager of
the Hickory Hill Roy Rogers is anxious for us to hold one at his store too.
So, it looks like we will do something like this again soon. Mark your
calendars for Saturday, October 31 (next month). We will be set up in the
lot behind/beside the store. You have to enter via the southern drive that
goes behind the strip mall. We hope you can make it; spend the day learning
tricks and talking VWs with your fellow members and gear heads. See you
then.
