AUGUST'S ANSWERS

SEPTEMBER'S - NEW QUESTIONS

1.       Q: If the German page of that 1948 manual has “Was man nicht tun soll,” (P.14) on it, what does the English page have on it for that?

A: That 5-word phrase translates as “don’ts!”.

2.       Q: What do “DIN and SAE” stand for?

A: DIN stands for Deutsche Industie Norman, which means German Industry Standard. And SAE means Society of Automobile Engineers.

3.   Q: This should be easy: what is the main featured difference between the type 4 engine and all the previous VW engines?

A: Its cooling fan was driven off the forward end of the crankshaft instead of being on the forward end of the generator/alternator shaft.

4.   Q: When did the European Beetle get blinker turn signals?

     A: In 1962.

5.   Q: What VW model is a Type “34?”

A: It is the Type 3 Karmann Ghia, commonly referred to as the “razor edge” VW.

6.   Q: When did the European VW Rabbit get the name “golf?”

A: In 1984. “Golf” does not mean the game, that word is German for a kind of Mediterranean wind. However, VW has played around with the game association that the word makes in the mind of English speaking VW enthusiasts.

1.   Another entry in my bilingual 1948 VW owner’s manual is on page 13. It is “Fahranleitung.” Its English translation is on page 12. What might that be?

2.   In what model year did VW come out with a Rabbit pickup truck?

3.  VW has recreated two of their earliest lost VW prototypes. What did they utilize to be able to recreate them?

4.  True or false, the VW Type 181 could be had with either 2 or 4 wheel drive?

5.   In what year did VW make a Type 3 convertible?

6.  VW had a number of factory built bodies on their bus chassis and some that were factory authorized but built outside of VW. Was the VW Type 2 ever available from the factory as a flat bed truck?
