SEPTEMBER 18, 2004 – Jonesboro, AR – This show was presented by the NE Arkansas Volks Folks VW Club, out of Jonesboro, AR. It was held at the Craigmont Forest Park, right on the edge of a beautiful lake. This was my first “road trip” with my new bug-hauler trailer, with just one axle and barely big enough for my bug. So, I was up way before the crack of dawn, loading the trailer in the dark by the light of my truck’s tail lights; kind of like blind-folded knife throwing. I let Connie sleep in, to travel later in the day with our neighbor friend and fellow member, Nancy T. I need brownie points! The trip was enjoyable, with crisp morning air to keep me awake and some solitude in which to contemplate the answers to all the world problems. I did not even have any incidents like most times (boring!). There were no rock pecks added; just some bug splats on the windshield (Lightning is UP there now). I didn’t even get lost. Can’t say the same for Nancy & Connie though! I was able to take it easy this year and enjoy the show; no judging for me. I to lots of nice folks, take plenty of pictures for the web site and even watch the slow-drags! NEAVF’s pres’, Don S., did some excellent work again this year on the trophies. They were all hand etched glass; mugs for the classes, plates for the “Best of’s …” and a pitcher for Best of Show. Jeff Dutton, who was previously a member of the Little Rock club, had recently relocated to Jonesboro and is now a member of NEAVF. He was the big winner this year. He showed them how to go slow in the slow drags and also won Best of Show in his blue Squareback. Fellow member, John Paul G. bested me with class win and Best Engine in his Beetle Juice ’70 Bug. Yup… Lightning was schooled and took home a 2nd in class. Not to worry, my next two shows made up for that! The pictures tell most of the stories; except that Metro VW Club of IL won Best Club Participation.
