VW TRIVIA

SEPTEMBER'S ANSWERS

OCTOBER'S - NEW QUESTIONS

1.       Q: Another entry in my bilingual 1948 VW owner’s manual is on the right-hand page 13. It is “Fahranleitung.” Its English translation is on the left-hand page 12. What might that be??

A: That German word means “Driving Instructions.”

2.       Q: In what model year did VW come out with a Rabbit pickup truck?
A: 1980.

3.   Q: VW has recreated two of their earliest lost VW prototypes. What did they utilize to be able to recreate them?

A: There were almost no remaining blueprints and no original cars or parts. The originals were either destroyed during W.W.II Allied bombing or broken up, probably for badly needed scrap metal, so VW hired an expert car restorer who used a number of sometimes rather grainy black and white photos, to decipher not only appearance but measurements as well. What little record remained of what original parts were used indicated using such parts as some DKW road wheels and steering wheels.   For being as near to authentic as reasonably possible, they chose to utilize early 986 C.C., 22.5 H. P. VW engines.

4.   Q: True or false, the VW Type 181 could be had with either 2 or 4 wheel drive?

A: False, the factory never offered 4-wheel drive as an option on the Type 181 Thing.

5.   Q: In what year did VW make a Type 3 convertible?

A: This is a trick question because actually all they did was produce a few prototype Type 3 convertibles (Cabriolets) in 1961. Even though the convertible was featured in the first Type 3 sales brochure, it was, ultimately, deemed too difficult to provide proper anti-twist stiffing to the chassis. So they were never mass-produced, after all.

6.   Q: VW had a number of factory built bodies on their bus chassis and some that were factory authorized but built outside of VW. Was the VW Type 2 ever available from the factory as a flat bed truck?

A: Well, this is sort of another trick question, because, yes, you could order a flat bed Type 2, but all that meant for VW was to sell you a pickup that did not have the hinged side gates installed!

  1. In what year did VW establish Volkswagen of America?

  2. An early water-cooled model from VW was the “Dasher.” What were its production years and what was the European name of the car?

  3. What does the VW model name “Scrirrocco” mean in German?

  4. What very noticeable feature distinguishes the late ‘70s U.S. built Rabbit from the German built one?

  5. Do you remember in what year the Concept One was revealed?

  6. In 1969, VW published an ad that was captioned, “It’s ugly but it gets you there.” What model was pictured in that ad?
