JANUARY 2005 - V'dubber of the Month |
Herschel D. & "Beetle Bailey"

|
Original Story by Tiffany G. –NOTE: The following is republication of an earlier article of 4 ˝ years ago. I have added comments. Happy January everyone! This month’s VW has a special story to it that I think we all are going to love. Herschel’s 65 VW bug (the multicolored one), affectionately called “Beetle Bailey” is this month’s featured car. So what is so special about it right? I mean, how can we miss Herschel’s car? Well folks, it might be a little tough to recognize the bug because…..dum dee dum dum….Herschel and Bobby painted it the original Java Green. By the time this article is published we all we probably have seen it. Herschel is taking a week off from work to devote to his bug. What is the club going to do now without this unique looking bug? Back in the early 1980’s Herschel had to sell his car and almost bought a 71 square back instead. Luckily his father in-law caught him in time showing all of the faults (rust, etc) with the square back before Herschel bought it. To compensate for crushing Herschel’s dreams, his father-in-law gave him what we have come to know as Herschel’s 65 multicolored bug. It is a daily driver. In fact, I ran into Herschel on Mt. Moriah a couple of months ago and I guess with two bugs driving side by side, we got lots of funny looks. Anyhow, congratulations Herschel on your newly painted bug! UPDATE: Herschel wanted me to let everyone know that it only took a week to paint the car. All he needs to do is get it completely back together for our next meeting. Thanks for the great Two Year Anniversary present Herschel!! Bill’s Comments: To those of you who, somehow, may not know, Herschel has been a member of our club since the second month of our existence, back in July of 1999. He was also a long time member of the previous club (River City Air Coolers) and the originator of their and our newsletter, “Das Mundstuck,” which means, “mouth piece.” Of course, he also provides us Volkswagen artwork and cartoons, along with VW Trivia. He is an avid scale modeler and often treats us to an article on VW Modeling. Besides all that, he is always busy finding us new sponsors or members. Herschel is married and is employed by Office Max, where he is an Electronics Manager. Besides loving VWs, he is also an active member of the Mid-South Cartoonists Association. Yes, we are very fortunate to have Herschel as a member of out Mid-South Volkswagen Club!
